This was the site of Fort Washington, built, along with Fort Lee in New Jersey, to keep the British from navigating north via the Hudson River. The British took the fort on November 16 and renamed it Fort Knyphausen, in honor of the German general (in British service) who captured it.

About TreebaseNYC

Collecting pieces of history can help us make sense of a place. Every new "dot" we find fits neatly into the graph, gets set aside as local legend or mystery, or may even help edit a long-held perspective.

Through this site, we'll connect facts, events, people, and places in New York City's history...one dot at a time.
